HEALTH BENEFITS OF HERBAL TEA

Herbal teas are healthier than standard teas, especially coffee. Most do not contain any caffeine or if they do, very little. They can improve overall health and some even have stronger medicinal properties which I will emphasize later. Herbal tea is an infusion or blend of leaves, fruits, bark and flower of any edible plant, which is then extracted in hot water. Getting in the habit of drinking herbal teas will help boost your immune system, aid in digestion, and offer wonderful calming properties .

Here are some of my favorites and what I suggest you get into the habit of drinking . Of course, this is also an easy way to boost your water intake!

CALMING CHAMOMILE TEA

Use 1 teaspoon of the tea per cup , or 1-2 oz per quart of water. Let steep, covered for 15-20 minutes. The longer it steeps, the more bitter it will be. It is excellent for infants and children as well as it is very mild and easy to drink . This recipe is really the same for all the teas below

BURDOCK ROOT

This is made the same way, but you may add honey or lemon. I often recommend this to my clients when they have swollen glands or lymph congestion, as this root has a beneficial effect on the lymphatic system, which is an important part of the immune system. Drink 3-4 cups per day to effectively cleanse your system if you are feeling congested.

OTHERS

Lemongrass is easy to grow and has a really nice taste. It helps lower blood pressure , aids in fluid retention and is good for your skin and hair.

Uva Varsi is an herbal tea that I have had a lot of success with when treating clients with urinary tract infections. I often combine it with marshmallow root. I have even given this to my dog. It works!

Peppermint tea helps with any type of gastrointestinal problem. I have offered it to many clients with indigestion, bloating and nausea. If you have eaten a large meal that may have not digested properly, drinking this tea will give you great relief.

All these teas are available at your local health food store. These are just a few of my favorites, but once you start educating yourself, you will find many different varieties to give you pleasure. Try to choose organic or wild crafted.
