Spring Cleaning for your Gut: The beginners guide to cleansing

Welcome spring! This is customarily the time of year when  we clean up our homes, our closets, and our yards. What we don’t realize is, as important as it is to clean up our external environment, it’s even more important to clean up our internal environment. As the seasons change, so do our bodies. When our gut is clean, our cells get more energy to function better and optimize our body’s performance. Work with nature, not against her.

So how do we clean our bodies? With a gentle cleanse. We’ve all heard about them, but it is often difficult to know where to begin. You can easily find cleanses /detoxes online, but it’s important to start slow. Drastic changes over a short period can be harmful to your digestive system, especially if you go back to your regular eating patterns immediately afterwards.

A dramatic cleanse can cause adverse reactions including diarrhea, allergies, bloating, and stomach cramps. It’s a much better idea to make gradual changes that lead to a more permanent healthy lifestyle.

Most people have not been eating optimally for years which causes the intestines to become compromised, weakening our ability to digest and properly absorb nutrients. My mission is to help people make healthier choices so they can live a longer, healthier, happier life.

Here are 5 safe and simple steps to get you started on the right track:

1. Eliminate processed foods
All packaged and boxed  foods are  what I call “food-less foods “. They are loaded with food colouring and preservatives for the sole purpose of lasting longer in your cupboards. Your cells do not recognize these lifeless foods like cereals, frozen or microwave dinners and most canned goods. If your elimination is weak, these lifeless foods get stored and ferment in your body leading to a weakened immune system. What do I mean if your elimination is weak ? If your bowels are not moving at least 3 times a day , you may be holding onto too much waste leading to inflammation . It is very hot inside our gut and food needs to not sit around longer than 12-18 hours

2. Focus on whole, pure foods
Eliminate all industrialized dairy, grains and sugars that can cause bloating and discomfort.

3. Read labels
I cannot emphasize this enough. Today we have more and more gluten-free, vegan, keto, and paleo choices but buyer beware …they can still be loaded with “natural flavours  and cheap seed oils, namely canola .

4. Increase your intake of raw food
Raw fruits and vegetables are much easier to digest and are full of enzymes, vitamins  minerals , and fibre !!  We need enzymes to break down food for optimal digestion and fibre to clean !

5. Increase your water intake
Aim for at least 2-3 litres per day. It is important to stay away from tap water . Besides the chemicals that are added to neutralize the chemicals , the water is loaded with other toxins. Do note that organic raw fruits and vegetables have the best quality water!
